Teechers is a fast-moving and entertaining play set in the vigour of life at a modern comprehensive school. Three school leavers, Salty, Hobby and Gail perform to the audience an account of their time at the school and in particular their time with Mr Nixon, the new drama teacher who ignited their passion for the stage with his idealism and belief that all children should be treated equally. But can Nixon and his students manage to make it through to the end of term play with their sanity intact? Godber’s loud and cheery comedy has a poignant end that underlines its pointed political thrust. Often seen as a critique on the underfunding and underachievement of the state education system. Teechers deals with the disillusionment of teachers and students alike making the play as relevant today as when first performed at the Edinburgh Festival in 1987.
