Matthew Bourne: Nutcracker!

Matthew Bourne’s show opening up dance to a much wider audience with its accessible staging and vivid storytelling. This version excited both the more traditional older ballet audiences as well as attracting a new contemporary audience with its relevance. The ballet follows Clara’s bittersweet journey from a hilariously bleak night at Dr Dross’ orphanage for waifs and strays, through a shimmering, ice-skating, winter wonderland to the scrumptious candy kingdom of Sweetieland. It uses Tchaikovsky’s glorious score, combining it with technicolor sets and costumes and sizzling choreography to tell a story crammed full of Bourne’s trademark wit, pathos and magical fantasy.
